Nasolabial fold filler in Seoul

The lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth often deepen because the midface above has lost support. We look at the cause first, then soften the fold with filler placed where it makes the most natural difference.

What nasolabial fold filler is

Nasolabial folds — sometimes called smile lines or laugh lines — run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Everyone has them to some degree, but they can deepen over time and make the face look tired or older. Nasolabial fold filler uses an injectable gel, most often hyaluronic acid (HA) , to soften the fold and the shadow it casts.

The key to a natural result lies in understanding why the fold has deepened. Filling only the line itself can look heavy or puffy, especially when you smile. At Obliv, we treat the cause first and the line second.

Why the fold deepens

Facial ageing happens from the inside out. The bone beside the nose gradually recedes, the deep fat pads of the midface shrink, and the support tissue that holds the cheek in place weakens. Fat then moves downward and gathers above the fold, while the area beside the nose loses support. The result is a deeper crease and a heavier look around the mouth.

Which layers are involved and how Obliv plans it

In our 8-layer Skin Architecture model — epidermis, upper dermis, full-thickness dermis, lower dermis, subcutaneous fat, fascia, muscle and bone — nasolabial folds involve several layers. Obliv uses a dual-plane approach: first restoring support just above the bone — often at the base of the fold beside the nose, and sometimes in the cheek above it — and then refining softly within the fat layer . Muscle is considered last.

In many cases, restoring cheek support reduces how much filler is needed in the fold itself, which helps the result look more natural when you talk and smile.

Who it suits

  • Nasolabial folds that are visible at rest
  • Shadows beside the nose that make the face look tired
  • Folds that have deepened with midface volume loss
  • People wanting a refreshed look without surgery

If the fold is mainly caused by sagging rather than volume loss, energy-based lifting such as Ultherapy PRIME or a thread lift such as MINT Lift may be more effective, sometimes in combination with filler.

What happens on the day

A director sees you from the first consultation. The doctor examines your face at rest and while smiling, from the front and the side, to understand how much of the fold comes from volume loss, sagging or movement. Your plan and the products used are recorded in your Skin Library.

After cleansing and numbing, filler is placed with a fine needle or blunt cannula. Most people feel pressure and mild discomfort. The change is visible straight away.

Downtime, results and how long they last

Mild swelling and possible bruising can last a few days. On the day, avoid touching or pressing the area for 4–6 hours, and skip saunas, alcohol and strenuous exercise.

HA filler typically lasts around 6–18 months; the area around the mouth moves a lot, which can influence how long it lasts. Results vary from person to person.

Often combined with

Nasolabial fold filler is often combined with cheek filler, energy lifting for laxity, and collagen stimulators such as PCL for skin quality. The doctor will explain the best order.

Is it right for me?

Filler is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with infection in the area. Medical history and previous fillers are reviewed first. If the fold is mostly from sagging, we will recommend lifting rather than more filler.

Questions worth asking at consultation

Because nasolabial folds can come from several causes, it is worth understanding yours before choosing a treatment. Try looking at your face in a mirror held slightly below eye level, which shows how gravity affects the midface. Useful questions include:

  • Is my fold mainly caused by volume loss, sagging, or skin quality?
  • Would restoring the cheek reduce how much filler the fold needs?
  • How will the result look when I talk and smile?
  • Would lifting or a collagen stimulator help the result last longer?

At a glance

  • Layers: Support above bone, then fat layer
  • Best for: Folds from midface volume loss

Questions about nasolabial fold filler

  • Why not just fill the line directly?

Folds usually deepen because the midface above has lost support. Filling only the line can look heavy when you smile. Restoring support first, often beside the nose or in the cheek, tends to look more natural and may need less product in the fold.

  • Will my smile look different?

The aim is to soften the fold while keeping your smile natural. The doctor checks your expression during planning and chooses product and placement to suit how your face moves.

  • How long does it last?

HA filler typically lasts around 6–18 months. Because the area around the mouth moves a lot, duration varies from person to person.

  • What if my folds are caused by sagging?

If sagging is the main cause, energy-based lifting or a thread lift may help more than filler alone. The doctor will explain the options at consultation.
