Anti-ageing in your 40s

In your 40s, change usually involves several layers at once — skin, fat and support tissue. Recovery here means combining energy, collagen stimulation and volume in the right order.

What anti-ageing means in your 40s

By the 40s, the changes that began quietly in earlier decades usually become visible. The jawline may soften and jowls start to form. Nasolabial folds and marionette lines deepen. Cheeks can look flatter, temples and under-eyes more hollow, and the skin itself thinner and less elastic. For many women, hormonal changes around this time speed up collagen loss.

The goal in your 40s is recovery: not turning back the clock, but restoring support and skin quality so the face looks rested and well-defined again. Because several layers are involved, a single treatment rarely gives a balanced result. Combining a few, in the right order, usually does.

Which layers are involved

Facial ageing progresses from the inside out. In our 8-layer Skin Architecture model:

  • Bone and deep support: the skeleton's foundation gradually reduces and ligaments loosen.
  • Fat: deep fat pads shrink while superficial fat descends, causing hollows above and heaviness below.
  • Fascia and SMAS: the supporting layer under the skin loosens, contributing to jowls and a blurred jawline.
  • Dermis: collagen continues to fall — roughly 1% a year from about 20, faster after menopause — so skin becomes thinner and less firm.

A director examines your face from the first consultation, and Mark-Vu imaging assesses skin quality. We decide which layers matter most before choosing any device.

Building a plan

A 40s plan typically draws on three programmes:

  • Contour — lifting at depth. HIFU reaches points at depth (1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm) and down to the SMAS. Ultherapy PRIME is the benchmark for deep sagging; CoolSoniq is a gentler option with cooling. RF such as Thermage or OLIGIO X tightens the dermis. See also our Ultherapy + Thermage combination .
  • Collagen Boost — rebuilding the dermis. PCL and PLLA collagen stimulators encourage new collagen; results begin at 1–3 months, peak at 3–6 and can last around 12–24 months.
  • Volume·Shape — restoring support. Following a dual-plane order — structural support above the bone first, then the fat layer, muscle last — CaHA or HA filler rebuilds lost structure. Thread lifts such as JAMBER or MINT Lift add lift and support.

Botox may be used last to balance muscles that pull features downward.

Timeline before a trip or event

Energy lifting gives a pulling sensation immediately; changes are noticeable after 1–3 months, with final results at 3–6 months. Collagen stimulators follow a similar curve. Filler and threads give a more immediate change, though swelling may take a couple of weeks to settle. For an event, starting four to six months ahead gives a combined plan time to mature. For a short stay in Seoul, lifting and injectables can often be done in one visit.

Keeping your results

  • HIFU typically lasts around 12–18 months, RF around 6–12 months; filler ~6–18 months (HA) or ~12–18 months (CaHA).
  • A yearly lifting session plus collagen support is a common maintenance rhythm.
  • Daily SPF50+ and prescribed home care protect skin quality.

Results vary from person to person. Your Skin Library record keeps every treatment on file to guide the next step.

Why the order of treatments matters

In your 40s, the sequence of a plan can affect the result as much as the treatments themselves. Our doctors generally work from the deepest layer outwards, because each step changes how the next one looks:

  • Support before surface. Restoring structure close to the bone first means less volume is usually needed in the more visible fat layer, which keeps results natural.
  • Lifting before fine-tuning. Once energy lifting has tightened the SMAS and dermis, the doctor can judge more accurately whether filler or threads are still needed, and how much.
  • Muscle balance last. Botox is used to soften muscles that pull features down after the underlying support has been addressed.
  • Barrier throughout. Barrier reinforcement before and protection after each main step helps the skin recover comfortably.

This order does not always mean separate visits; several steps can often be combined on the same day. If you are wondering whether a combination suits you, see energy lifting with a collagen stimulator or our goal page on a non-surgical face lift .

At a glance

  • Focus: Recovery — energy + stimulation + volume
  • Layers: Dermis, SMAS, fat, bone support
  • Main tools: Ultherapy, Thermage, PCL/PLLA, CaHA/HA
  • Lifting result: Final at 3–6 months
  • Ideal lead time: 4–6 months before an event
  • Related programmes: Contour, Collagen Boost, Volume·Shape

Questions about anti-ageing in your 40s

  • Ultherapy or Thermage — which do I need?

They work at different depths. Ultherapy (HIFU) targets points deep down to the SMAS for sagging, while Thermage (RF) heats the dermis evenly for overall tightening. Many people in their 40s benefit from both; your doctor will advise after examining you.

  • Will lifting alone fix hollows?

Lifting tightens and repositions but does not add volume. If cheeks, temples or under-eyes have hollowed, filler or collagen stimulators are usually needed alongside. The plan depends on which layers have changed.

  • Does it hurt?

Sensations vary between people and devices. HIFU can feel uncomfortable at depth; CoolSoniq uses cooling and is generally more comfortable. Your doctor will discuss comfort options with you.

  • How much does it cost?

It depends on the combination and number of areas. Ask us on WhatsApp for a personalised quote.
