What dark circles are
“Dark circles” describes any darkness under the eyes that makes you look tired, even after a good night's sleep. For some people it is a brownish tint; for others it is bluish or purplish; and for many it is a shadow created by a hollow or groove between the lower lid and the cheek. Most people have a combination, which is why concealer, eye creams or a single treatment so often seem to help only partly.
Why they happen — and which layers are involved
Our 8-layer Skin Architecture model helps separate the main types:
- Pigment-type circles sit in the epidermis and sometimes the upper dermis. They are often brownish, may run in families, and can be worsened by rubbing the eyes, allergies and sun exposure.
- Thin-skin or vascular-type circles involve the upper dermis . The skin under the eye is naturally very thin, and as collagen falls with age, underlying vessels and muscle show through as a bluish or purplish tone.
- Structural or shadow-type circles come from deeper layers. As we age, change starts from the inside out — bone and deep fat support lessen, and fat descends — so a hollow forms below the eye and casts a shadow. This involves subcutaneous fat and the support above the bone .
Knowing which type is dominant matters, because a laser will not fill a hollow, and filler will not fade pigment.
How Obliv approaches dark circles
- Diagnosis first. A director examines the eye area in different lighting and positions from the first consultation, and Mark-Vu imaging helps show pigment and redness.
- For pigment. Gentle pico toning or Nobleen laser toning , with careful settings for this delicate area, may help lighten brownish tone over a course.
- For thin skin. Treatments that support the upper dermis — such as Rejuran , skin boosters or Belotero Revive — may help improve skin quality and reduce how much shows through.
- For hollows. When shadowing is structural, under-eye filler with HA can soften the transition between lid and cheek. Following our dual-plane principle, support is considered from the deeper layers first. HA filler typically lasts around 6–18 months.
Many people benefit from a combination, sequenced so each step supports the next.
What to expect
Toning and skin-quality treatments work gradually over several sessions, spaced around the skin's roughly 28-day cycle. Filler changes the shadow straight away, with some swelling or bruising possible in the first days. On the day of an injection, avoid touching the area for 4–6 hours and skip sauna, alcohol and strenuous exercise. Results vary from person to person, and your doctor will explain realistic expectations for your type of dark circles.
Caring for the eye area between visits
- Avoid rubbing your eyes; treat allergies that make you rub.
- Apply SPF50+ around the eyes and wear sunglasses outdoors.
- Use a gentle eye moisturiser and keep the barrier comfortable with your prescribed home care .
- Sleep and hydration will not remove structural circles but do help how the area looks day to day.
Visiting from abroad
If filler is part of your plan, allow a few days in Seoul afterwards in case of swelling or bruising, and read our notes on flying after filler . Send photos of your eye area in daylight on WhatsApp, and ask us on WhatsApp for a personalised quote.
When dark circles need a closer look
Most dark circles are a cosmetic concern, but some changes around the eyes deserve a medical check rather than an aesthetic treatment. Mention any of the following at your consultation, or see your own doctor first:
- Darkness or puffiness that appeared suddenly, or affects only one eye
- Swelling, itching or flaking of the eyelids, which may point to allergy or eczema
- Puffiness that is worse every morning and comes with other symptoms such as tiredness
- A spot or patch of pigment under the eye that is changing in size, shape or colour
Your doctor will also look at the areas around the circles. Under-eye shadows often travel with flattening of the cheek or a generally tired-looking face , and treating only the lower lid can leave the result looking unfinished. If that applies, your plan may include support for the midface too, explained at consultation.
At a glance
- Skin layers: Epidermis, upper dermis, deep fat and support
- Pigment: Pico or Nobleen toning
- Thin skin: Rejuran, skin boosters, Belotero Revive
- Hollows: HA under-eye filler (lasts ~6–18 months)
- Downtime: Minimal for toning; possible swelling after filler
- Key step: Identify your type first
Questions about dark circles
How do I know which type of dark circles I have?
A simple clue: if the darkness changes when you tilt your head or look up into light, a hollow is often involved. Brown tone that stays the same is more likely pigment. A doctor examines the area to confirm, as most people have a mix.
Will under-eye filler fix all my dark circles?
Filler can soften shadows caused by hollowing, but it does not change pigment or very thin skin. That is why your doctor may combine it with toning or skin-quality treatments.
Is the eye area safe to treat with laser?
The eye area needs special care, adjusted settings and eye protection. Your doctor will decide whether laser is appropriate for you and how it should be done.
How long do results last?
HA filler typically lasts around 6–18 months. Toning and skin-quality results depend on sun protection, habits and maintenance, and vary from person to person.
