What loss of elasticity means
Elasticity is the skin's ability to stretch and then return to its shape. You may notice it fading when a pillow crease takes longer to disappear in the morning, when makeup settles into lines it never used to, or when skin on the cheeks and jaw feels softer and less bouncy to the touch. It often comes before visible sagging : the skin is still in place, but it has lost some of the spring that keeps it smooth and taut.
Why it happens and which layers are involved
In our 8-layer Skin Architecture model, elasticity lives mainly in the dermis — upper, full-thickness and lower. The dermis is a network of collagen, which gives strength, and elastic fibres, which give recoil, held in a hydrated gel. Several things wear it down:
- Age. Collagen falls by roughly 1% a year from around the age of 20. After menopause the decline is faster.
- UV exposure. Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and damages elastic fibres, which is why sun-exposed areas lose elasticity first.
- Dehydration. A weak barrier in the epidermis lets water escape, so the dermis loses some of its plumpness.
- Lifestyle. Smoking, poor sleep, rapid weight changes and stress all add to the load.
Below the dermis, the fat and fascia layers also influence how firm the face looks overall. If those have changed too, treatment needs to reach deeper.
How Obliv approaches loss of elasticity
- Diagnosis first. A director assesses your skin and Mark-Vu imaging records wrinkles and oil–moisture balance. We check whether the change is mainly in the dermis or whether deeper layers are also involved.
- Dermal tightening (RF). RF heats evenly through the dermis to around 65–75°C to tighten and stimulate collagen. Thermage targets the whole dermis; OLIGIO X remodels collagen in the lower dermis; ALLTITE works in the upper dermis for immediate tightening and texture; Sofwave adds instant firmness at 1.5 mm.
- Collagen stimulation. PCL and PLLA injections trigger a controlled response that prompts fibroblasts to make new collagen, then gradually dissolve.
- Regeneration and hydration. Rejuran, exosomes and skin boosters support the regenerative environment and quick hydration.
- Deeper support. Where laxity extends to the SMAS, HIFU such as Ultherapy PRIME may be added. Energy lifting combines well with collagen stimulators.
What to expect
RF tightening gives some immediate firmness and continues to improve over 1–3 months, with results lasting around 6–12 months. Collagen stimulators start to show at 1–3 months, peak at 3–6 months and can last around 12–24 months; temporary swelling, bruising or small lumps are possible. Boosters give quicker hydration but need regular top-ups. Results vary from person to person.
Keeping results
- Daily SPF50+ is the most effective way to protect collagen you have built.
- Use the pH-5.5-matched home care we prescribe to keep the barrier healthy.
- In your 30s the focus is maintenance; from your 40s, combining energy, stimulation and volume tends to work best.

Early signs worth acting on
Loss of elasticity is often easier to slow down than to reverse, so it helps to recognise it early. A simple check is to gently pinch the skin on the back of your hand or along the cheek and watch how quickly it settles. Other signs include foundation that creases by midday, fine lines that remain after you stop smiling, and a jawline that feels softer than it looks in photos.
- In your 20s: protecting what you have with daily SPF50+, barrier care and occasional skin boosters .
- In your 30s: maintenance with RF tightening or collagen-supporting injections such as Rejuran .
- From your 40s: a combined plan of energy, stimulation and, where needed, volume.
Your doctor will look at how much change is in the dermis versus deeper layers before suggesting where to start.
At a glance
- Main layer: Dermis (upper to lower)
- Main tools: Thermage, OLIGIO X, PCL/PLLA, Rejuran
- RF lasts: Around 6–12 months
- Stimulators: Peak 3–6 months; last ~12–24 months
- Downtime: Usually minimal

Questions about loss of elasticity
Is loss of elasticity the same as sagging?
They are related but different. Elasticity is about how well skin springs back, mainly in the dermis. Sagging involves deeper layers moving downward. Many people have some of both, and your doctor will assess which matters more.
Which is better: RF or collagen stimulators?
They work differently and often complement each other. RF tightens and stimulates collagen with heat, while PCL or PLLA prompt the skin to build collagen gradually. Your doctor may suggest combining them.
How long do results last?
RF typically lasts around 6–12 months and collagen stimulators around 12–24 months. Results vary from person to person and depend on sun protection and lifestyle.
At what age should I start?
In your 20s the focus is prevention, in your 30s maintenance, and from your 40s recovery with a combination of approaches. Your doctor will recommend what suits your skin now.
